The story of Irene

She was a bright young girl from Nairobi, Kenya — the youngest of three children and the only daughter in her family. Her laughter filled every corner of their home, a sound that carried warmth and joy. With curious eyes and a boundless spirit, she approached the world with wonder, always eager to learn, explore, and dream.

She had a way of bringing people together — her smile could soften even the hardest days. Whether she was dancing barefoot in the yard after a rainstorm or helping her mother in the kitchen, she radiated happiness and love, the kind that made everyone around her feel lighter.

Moving to America

Irene’s brothers had settled in Idaho, carving out a quiet but fulfilling life in the wide, open spaces of the American Northwest. They worked hard, built homes, and started families of their own. Their houses were always full of laughter — children running around, the smell of home-cooked meals, and the warmth of family that reminded them of home in Kenya.

Back home, Irene had just graduated. She had always been a dreamer — bright, determined, and full of compassion. Her heart was set on becoming a nurse, a calling she felt deep within her. She wanted to help people, to bring comfort and care wherever she went. But to do that, she needed to study in the United States, where her brothers had already built a foundation.

Convincing her father wasn’t easy. He was protective, cautious about sending his daughter so far away. But Irene’s persistence, her gentle reasoning, and her unwavering passion eventually softened his heart. He saw the fire in her eyes — the same determination that had carried their family through so much. With his blessing, Irene packed her bags and boarded a plane to Idaho, ready to begin a new chapter.

Life in Idaho was beautiful in its own quiet way. Irene quickly became the heart of the family gatherings. She loved dancing around the living room with her sisters-in-law, singing along to their favorite songs, and laughing until her sides hurt. Her nieces and nephews adored her — “Auntie Irene” who always had time to play, to listen, to love.

Between family life and school, Irene’s days were full. She studied hard, balancing her classes and clinicals with the joy of being surrounded by family. Nursing school wasn’t easy, but she thrived — her kindness and dedication shining through in everything she did.

In Idaho, Irene found not just a new home, but a life filled with purpose, love, and laughter. She was chasing her dream, surrounded by the people who loved her most, and every day brought her one step closer to becoming the nurse she had always wanted to be.

Then she met Nathan Hightman

Isolation from family

When Irene told her brothers, Kennedy and Chris, that she was moving in with a friend, they didn’t think much of it at first. She had always been independent and adventurous, so the idea of her sharing a place with someone new seemed normal. But soon, small details didn’t add up. Through conversations and subtle clues, they discovered that Irene hadn’t moved in with a female friend at all—she was living with a man named Nathan Hightman.

Concerned but wanting to be supportive, Kennedy and Chris decided they needed to meet this mystery boyfriend. A dinner was arranged, giving them a chance to see who their sister had chosen to share her life with. From the moment they met Nathan, something felt off. He was polite enough, but there was a coldness beneath the surface—a controlling edge that neither brother could ignore. They tried to give him the benefit of the doubt for Irene’s sake, but the unease lingered long after the evening ended.

Their instincts proved right. Over time, Nathan began isolating Irene, convincing her that her brothers were trying to control her and didn’t want her to be happy. Slowly, he pulled her away from her family’s influence. Then came the move—Nathan told everyone they were relocating to Arizona for a fresh start. But that wasn’t the truth. Instead, he took Irene to Gillette, Wyoming, cutting her off even further from the people who loved her most.

What began as a simple move with a “friend” had turned into something far more troubling—a quiet separation from her family and the beginning of a dark chapter none of them could have imagined.

Something is wrong!!!

Irene lived a quiet and modest life in Gillette, Wyoming. She balanced her time between school and work, maintaining a routine that reflected her calm and reserved nature. Despite being far from her family, she stayed closely connected with her brothers through regular phone calls and text messages, often giving the impression that she was still living in Arizona. Her bond with her parents in Kenya remained strong as well—she frequently FaceTimed them, sharing updates about her life and checking in on them with warmth and affection.

Neighbors who lived near Irene and her partner, Nathan, described the couple as very quiet and private. They were rarely seen outside and mostly kept to themselves, giving little insight into their daily lives.

In late February, Irene’s family began to worry when their calls and messages to her went unanswered. The concern deepened when they eventually received text messages from her phone that didn’t sound like her. The messages were written in a mix of English and Swahili, but the Swahili portions were awkward and incorrect—clearly not the way Irene, a native speaker, would write. It seemed as though someone had used an online translator to mimic her language, confirming her family’s fear that something was terribly wrong.

Kennedy and Chris, concerned after losing contact with Irene, decided to call in a welfare check to the local police department in Arizona, believing that’s where she and her boyfriend, Nathan, were living. When officers checked the address, they discovered that Irene and Nathan no had never lived there. This was the moment Kennedy and Chris learned that the couple had actually relocated to Gillette, Wyoming.

Determined to ensure Irene’s safety, they reached out to the Gillette Police Department and requested another welfare check. Officers were dispatched to the couple’s residence on Pathfinder Lane. When they arrived, Nathan told them that Irene had packed her belongings into plastic garbage bags, left in a dark-colored SUV, and that he hadn’t heard from her since.

Alarmed by the situation, Irene’s brothers traveled to Gillette and officially filed a missing person report. The police opened an investigation into her disappearance. As detectives began looking deeper, they uncovered troubling financial activity: Nathan had transferred all the money from Irene’s bank accounts into his own, maxed out her credit cards, and deleted her emails and social media accounts.

These discoveries led authorities to open a separate investigation into financial and intellectual property crimes committed against Irene, expanding the scope of the case beyond her disappearance.

A dedicated group of community volunteers came together with one shared purpose — to be the voice for Irene Gakwa’s family and the feet on the ground in their search for answers. Because Irene’s loved ones lived far away, these volunteers became their local support system, organizing and leading more than ten searches across the area. Their efforts spanned foot searches, ATV patrols, and horseback searches, covering miles of rugged terrain in hopes of finding any trace of Irene.

Beyond the physical searches, the group also worked tirelessly to keep Irene’s story alive in the public eye. They hosted a candlelight vigil to honor her and a peaceful protest outside the home Irene once shared with Nathan Hightman. During that protest, Hightman—who continued to refuse cooperation with law enforcement—called the Gillette Police Department claiming harassment. However, the volunteers remained peaceful and lawful, standing firm in their right to demand justice.

Through the persistence of these advocates and Irene’s brothers, her story reached national attention. Their combined efforts led to coverage on CNN and NewsNation, which in turn sparked interest from numerous other media outlets. This grassroots movement of compassion, determination, and advocacy ensured that Irene’s name and story would not be forgotten.

Detectives worked tirelessly to investigate Irene’s disappearance, following every lead and responding immediately to any information received from the community. Their dedication was mirrored by the community team that had formed in support of Irene — a group of determined individuals who refused to let her story fade.

While the Gillette Police Department carried out their official investigation, the community team poured their energy into uncovering any detail that could shed light on what happened to Irene. They organized search efforts, gathered tips, and maintained constant communication with law enforcement.

Beyond the investigation, they worked relentlessly to keep Irene’s story alive in the public eye. Yard signs, billboards, banners, and flyers appeared across towns and highways, each one a reminder that Irene was still missing and that answers were still needed. Thousands of postcards were printed and distributed, spreading awareness far beyond the local area.

During hunting season, the team reached out to local hunting guides, sharing Irene’s story and asking them to pass it along to their hunters. They urged everyone in the field to stay alert for anything unusual — any sign that could help bring Irene home.

Their combined efforts — the persistence of detectives and the unwavering commitment of the community — reflected a shared determination to find the truth and seek justice for Irene.

Nathan Hightman’s behavior in the period surrounding Irene Gakwa’s disappearance raised numerous red flags that painted a troubling picture of control, secrecy, and possible deception.

It began with his access to and theft of Irene’s financial accounts. Investigators discovered that Hightman had drained her bank accounts, transferred funds, and manipulated her financial information without her consent.

Around the same time, Hightman made a series of suspicious purchases — including boots, pants, and a shovel — items that, in hindsight, appeared to have no legitimate explanation. These purchases were made shortly after Irene was last seen, deepening suspicions about his intentions.

Neighbors later reported seeing Hightman burning items in a barrel in his backyard not long after Irene’s disappearance. The burn barrel became a central focus of the investigation, as authorities believed it could have contained evidence related to Irene. However, some observers speculated that the burning might have been a deliberate distraction — a facade meant to divert attention from other incriminating actions.

Further investigation revealed that before Irene vanished, she and Hightman had sold her Acura TL to a local car lot. The car lot owner described the transaction as tense and unsettling, noting that Irene refused to get out of the vehicle until Hightman arrived. The owner recalled that the sale seemed forced, as though Hightman was orchestrating it against Irene’s will.

Taken together, these actions — the financial theft, the strange purchases, the backyard burning, and the coerced car sale — suggested a pattern of control and manipulation. It appeared that Hightman was systematically removing every means of independence Irene had, isolating her both financially and physically in the days leading up to her disappearance.

Another instance of Nathan Hightman’s suspicious behavior unfolded on September 8th, 2022, when he filed a protective stalking order against search lead Stacy Koester — a key figure organizing community searches for Irene Gakwa. The timing of this filing was notable, coming just days before a planned search in a field near Hightman’s residence.

In his filing, Hightman accused Koester of harassing him by calling from restricted numbers at all hours, exposing his personal information, and posting his home address and GPS coordinates online while allegedly inciting others against him. He also requested that her TikTok account be shut down, claiming her daily updates about Irene’s case were endangering him. Hightman stated that while Koester herself might not be dangerous, her “fans” posed a threat — a claim that appeared to be an attempt to discredit her and halt her advocacy.

A temporary protection order was granted, forcing Koester to take down her TikTok account and stop sharing updates about Irene’s case. However, on September 17th, 2022, the court dismissed Hightman’s claims after finding no evidence to support them. Koester’s phone records and work schedule proved she had not made any of the alleged calls or messages. The only contact she had ever initiated with Hightman was a single text early in the investigation, encouraging him to assist in finding Irene.

During the hearing, Hightman described himself as a “very private person,” while Koester countered that the issue was not about stalking but rather an attempt by Hightman to silence her and divert attention from Irene’s disappearance.

In March 2023, Nathan Hightman pleaded guilty to several financial and intellectual property crimes connected to Irene Gakwa. These charges stemmed from his unauthorized use of her bank accounts and online accounts following her disappearance. The court sentenced him to serve up to six years in a Wyoming correctional facility and ordered him to pay more than $13,000 in fines and restitution.

After serving part of his sentence, Hightman was granted parole in March 2025. He is currently residing in Cheyenne, Wyoming — only a few hours away from the Gillette home he once shared with Irene before she went missing.
